Zoom, Zoom, Zoom — what a busy city with lots of quilted detail. This weekend, I wrapped up this project by adding the solid back binding. I found this quilt panel back in November 2010 on a Local Quilt Store Shop Hop — actually, my husband found the panel and knew that it would be a fun play mat! This one is staying at our house for Jimmy. I used some Richard Scarry fabric for the backing with a Busy Town design. Inspired by Angela Walter’s book (Free-motion Quilting with Angela Walters), I incorporated many designs into this quilt – pebbling for the roads, pointed zig zags for the grass, chain squares for windows, wavy lines for roofs, wishbones for siding on buildings, swirls for the pond. The dense quilting took a very long time, which is why I took a break from the project last August. Now that Jimmy is playing with his cars more, I finished this car mat just in time. You can see that Jimmy’s current cars are a tad out of proportion, taking up the entire road. That will change over time as his cars will shrink to the matchbox size!
